I suffered from debilitating periods as a teen and would often miss school because the pain was so intense. My mom and gynecologist decided that at age 14, hormonal birth control would be the answer! Well 2 years later, I was at a track meet, had just finished my race and felt the most excruciating pelvic pain I had ever felt. An ultrasound revealed I had multiple cysts on my ovaries. At 21, I discovered I had PCOS but had no idea what it really was nor how to manage it. My doctor's answer was to keep me on birth control, which only made things worse for me. By the time I was 23 I was no longer taking hormonal birth control and I was on the path to learning how nutrition and living a healthier lifestyle could improve my life. Over the years, I would experience various chronic and confusing symptoms, some worse than others.
Many of my complaints were brushed off or I was told my symptoms were normal for a "mom" or "woman" or my favorite, "it's just what happens when to some women", but having the opportunity to travel around the world and meet women from different backgrounds and cultures taught me that what I was experiencing was not normal. I've spent the past 20 years learning, researching, training with experts and obtaining an obscene amount of certifications to improve not only my own health and my daughters health, but also the health of hundreds of women around the world who are dealing with PCOS.
